August 10

Yesterday, I heard intersting stories about cultures. Kevin told us about not only American and Japanese culture but also Russian. It is often said that the difference of culutures occured because of that of climates. I learned Japanese are afraid of the nature and follow it while Western European try to control it. How about America?
We went to China town and Adams Morgan and U street. Multicultural town made me excited!I had a very valuable time. Thank you for taking us there!!

Do you remember our bus ride from the airport to College Park? Our driver talked about how Americans make a big deal out of the weather. For instance, they think that heat waves and thunderstorms are caused by something WE did, and can't just think that it is a natural occurance. In that respect, I think Americans are more like Western Europe.

Good question about nature, Eriko. Americans respect nature and we have tons of national parks. But you know what America's greatest love is? Business. (President Calvin Coolidge said, "The business of America is business."). So when the choice must be made between preserving nature and making money, it will probably be money.

Wow. Sorry I got so serious. But no longer! It's almost 6:30 p.m. and there will be 2 episodes of my favorite show: The Simpsons.

Talk soon!

I don't think the Japanese are afraid of nature, but they love and respect it. Westerners (including Americans) tend to try to control nature, but it can't always be done, and even when we succeed in the short run, we may face problems in the long run. For example, we may dam a river to make a lake, but our action results in a drying out of the land downriver.

My favorite author, John McPhee, wrote an interesting book on this subject called "The Control of Nature". The title plays on 2 possible meanings: our control of nature, and nature's control of us!
